LEW is an acronym for Leemans and Wicker.
Kim Leemans and Merel Wicker studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Art Academy (Amsterdam), and have been co-operating as freelance fashion designers since 2001. After graduating both have done individual and joint projects, and during this time LEW emerged.
In January 2007 they officially presented themselves with the collection LEWishere, in the shape of a exposition during the Amsterdam Fashion week. The collection LEWishere2, presented at Off Schedule 2007 followed up on the same theme. In Januari of the next year they presented their collection 'Nachbarin' at their first solo catwalk show.
The combination of concept and wearability is always at the core of all their designs. A design/collection is always stronger with a steady concept. It forces them to work with a framework, and these boundaries result in surprising results.
The characteristics of their designs are reflective of streetware: recognisable in their silhouettes and wearability. All the garments are mainly made from jersey and tricot. They use eye-catching techniques like weaving strips of tricot and patch-working. Combining this with their choice of fresh, mature colours and graphic shapes, they create a refreshing and powerful image. |
